Shahs of Sunset Ssn 5/Ep 9 - Lights, Camera, Kaftans!

Glenn Rowley

It's the big debut for Asa Kaftans on this week's Shahs of Sunset! However, drama takes center stage as the veracity of GG's illness is called into question and Jessica drops a bombshell accusation about her marriage to Mike. Read on for a full recap of the drama...

After months of preparation, Asa Soltan Rahmati is finally putting the pieces together for her first fashion show for Asa Kaftans. The stakes are high for the show - after all, Asa has put over $50,000 of her own money into the production. Her mom Zinat doesn't need to know that though, and Asa skirts around how much she's actually spent when going over details with her mother/part-time employee. Remember, Asa Kaftans operates as a family business, so the success or failure of the fashion show will impact not only Asa but also her parents and brother. Having escaped from Iraq to make a new life for themselves in America, all Asa's mom and dad want now is stability. However, everything her parents have accomplished to give her a better life is merely a jumping-off point for the Persian priestess's goals and dreams.

Meanwhile, Mike Shouhed is meeting Reza Farahan for some male bonding time over manicures at Hammer & Nails, the LA-based, guys-only nails shop of Shark Tank fame. After fishing for compliments about his stand-up comedy debut, Reza turns the conversation to the real topic he wants to discuss: how to solve a problem like Golnesa "GG" Gharachedaghi. The mustachioed queen bee of the Shahs suspects that something is fishy with GG's story about having rheumatoid arthritis. According to Reza, for someone who just dropped the bomb that she's about to undergo chemotherapy, GG doesn't exactly seem like someone who's sick. After suffering through a year of fake disease storylines by Bravo, I honestly don't want to even go here. Can we please put an end to questioning people's illnesses in the Bravoverse?

In an attempt to fix their quickly eroding relationship, Mercedes "MJ" Javid has started going to couple's counseling with her boyfriend Tommy Feight. In their session this week, MJ's therapist asks how things have gone for the couple and Tommy starts explaining the latest meltdown they had to work through. MJ is desperately trying to hold onto this relationship while still standing up for what she says she needs, but Tommy is losing his patience and his sense of humor with the relationship. By later in the episode, he's moved out and the couple has apparently broken up, leaving MJ reeling and devastated.

As Asa works on fitting her models and arranging the best order in which to present her kaftans, Mike meets for drinks with his estranged wife Jessica Parido. At the end of last week's episode, the vibe between these two seemed to have thawed into some twisted form of semi-hateful lust. However, as Jessica sits down it appears things have frozen back up between the newlyweds. Hoping for a more permanent reconciliation, Mike sees this back-and-forth as confusing mixed signals, but Jessica doesn't feel like Mike is done paying for his secret sins and misdeeds. Mike cops to being a terrible husband, but won't seem to say out loud exactly what Jessica is pressing for. The couple reaches yet another tense stand-off, and it appears that the door back to happily ever after is rapidly closing for them.

Faster than you can say "kaftan," the day arrives for Asa's fashion show and the Shahs descend on the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills for the event. The Persian priestess is backstage doing some last-minute prepping for the models, so Reza decides it's the perfect time to start questioning GG's rheumatoid arthritis again. According to Reza, it doesn't make sense that Golnesa would be starting chemotherapy when she apparently hasn't changed any part of her hard-partying lifestyle to cope with the disease. For some reason, Reza decides Shervin Roohparvar should be the one to deliver this news to GG and pushes the newbie to confront her with the group's questions before the fashion show starts. It feels like poor Sherv may be getting hazed to do the veterans' dirty work just for being the newbie in the cast.

However, Shervin performs his job as a good, if reluctant, soldier and pulls GG aside to air the group's collective concerns regarding the veracity of her illness. Obviously, GG doesn't love hearing that her friends are doubting her RA in any way - especially considering that they've watched her battle the disease for over five years now. The barb particularly stings since Shervin - the one person who has been ride or die with her for years - is the one who's bringing this information to her. From GG's perspective, Shervin should've simply shut the conversation down and defended her instead of turning around and giving Reza's conspiracy theories any credibility. Personally, I think I speak for all of us when I say that I'm over, over, over this storyline already. GG has rheumatoid arthritis. Period, end of discussion.

Asa's fashion show is attended by plenty of bloggers, press and a handful of famous faces - including the inimitable LaToya Jackson and Asa boyfriend Jermaine Jackson, Jr. (who stays offscreen). However, the moment that truly shocks everyone is when Jessica shows up, rocking a stunning nude cutout dress. Mike is particularly perplexed as to why his estranged wife is making an appearance. Following their awkward meeting earlier in the episode, he thought she once again didn't want anything to do with him. The drama starts almost immediately between the pair when Mike catches Jessica texting someone at the table and, thinking it's another guy, demands to know who it is. Saying it's none of his business, Jessica refuses to tell him and the tension builds as she threatens to "out" Mike to his friends if he doesn't calm down and drop the discussion. Despite the warning, Mike tries to call her bluff and then Jessica drops the bombshell we've all been waiting for: "that you cheated on me? Let's talk about it."

So the big secret Jessica's been keeping for Mike seems to finally be out. Mike thanks his lucky stars that none of the other Shahs seemed to overhear Jessica's claim and as the ensuing argument moves to the entrance of the Four Seasons, his costars are confused as to what the couple is fighting about now. Even the hotel staff is getting frustrated with the drama and actually threatens to shut down the fashion show before it even begins if the fighting doesn't stop. Eventually, Reza is able to convince Mike to come with him to cool off, while Jessica storms away to find her seat on the runway's front row. With that, the fashion show begins and Asa's line of kaftans looks positively stunning as models of all shapes, sizes and colors strut down the runway showing off the colorful, glamorous, exotic frocks. As Asa and her mom walk out with all the models at the end of the show, it seems that the presentation has been a smashing success - except for the two empty chairs on the front row where Mike and Reza are supposed to be seated.

It turns out that the boys missed the entire show while Reza was busy trying to talk Mike down. Asa is obviously disappointed that her best friends couldn't stop squabbling for more than 15 minutes to support her big day. And it must be frustrating. As the constant cheerleader and peacekeeper of the group, all Asa was asking was for her friends to sit for 15 minutes on the front row and cheer on Asa Kaftans. Is that really too much to ask? Yet once again, the drama insists on taking center stage as Mike chases Jessica out to her car after the show, only to get the door slammed in his face. As Mike is left standing alone in the street, a producer asks him in his confessional whether his wife's accusation that he cheated is true. His answer? "No."
